Rubellite takes its red color from irradiation, and the two sources cannot presently be distinguished from one another. At 8.84 mm deep the faceted grid across the top breaks up and returns light that a conventional crown would swallow in a stone this saturated, and it keeps an eleven carat rubellite from reading as a flat block of color. The pierced gallery is a further indication of custom work rather than a stock casting, since it serves to admit light from beneath the pavilion.
