Precious Metals IRAs: Can You Use Gold You Already Own?

September 22, 2026

Owning an eligible gold coin personally does not mean you can simply deposit it into an IRA as your annual contribution. IRS Publication 590-A states that contributions, other than rollover contributions, must be made in cash. A metal’s eligibility to be purchased by an IRA and its eligibility to be contributed from your personal collection are separate questions. This distinction matters before anyone ships coins or bars to a dealer or storage facility. Read IRS Publication 590-A.

Selling your own metal to your IRA is not a routine workaround. IRS Publication 590-B specifically lists selling property to your IRA among examples of prohibited transactions. Moving assets that already belong to a retirement account is a different situation from placing personally owned property into one. The custodian and your tax professional should confirm the permitted procedure for the particular accounts and assets involved. Review the IRS explanation of prohibited transactions.

The useful first question is therefore, “Who owns this metal now—the individual or the retirement account?” Establishing that answer helps identify which process needs review. Pryce House’s role is to provide product availability, pricing and purchase coordination for eligible metals through the applicable custodian’s procedures. For that information, visit Pryce House Precious Metals IRAs.
