General information about metals commonly accepted for self-directed IRAs.Federal law permits certain coins and sufficiently refined gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion to be held by an IRA when applicable requirements are satisfied. The IRA's trustee or custodian must approve the investment, and the metal must be held through the required custodial and depository arrangement.
General minimum fineness standards commonly applied to bullion are:
Certain specifically authorized coins may qualify despite having a different fineness. The American Gold Eagle is one example.
Collectible, numismatic, graded, jewelry, gemstone, and other products may be prohibited or rejected by the custodian. Product eligibility depends on the exact item, applicable law, and the custodian's requirements.
Do not arrange for IRA-owned metals to be delivered to your home, personal safe, safe-deposit box, or another destination you control. Personal possession or an improper storage arrangement may create adverse tax consequences. Consult the IRA custodian and your own tax or legal adviser before proceeding.
