Gemstone Market Update | September 2, 2026

At Christie's June 9 Magnificent Jewels auction in New York, three sapphire-and-diamond rings sold for $2.271 million, $2.149 million and $1.778 million. A pair of David Morris ruby-and-diamond earrings realized $1.422 million, while an emerald-and-diamond ring sold for $368,300. These are results for specific finished jewels and are not general price benchmarks for loose gemstones. View the reported auction results.

GIA's redesigned colored-stone reports now include expanded country-of-origin services for opal, peridot and demantoid garnet. The updated services took effect January 1 and accompanied revised submission weight categories and fees. An origin conclusion records the laboratory's determination when supported by its reference data; it does not establish a gemstone's monetary value. Read the GIA announcement.

U.S. tariff treatment for loose colored stones changed on July 24 under the new Section 301 schedule. Covered gemstones originating in India or Sri Lanka are subject to an additional 10% duty, while covered stones originating in Thailand are subject to an additional 12.5% duty. The affected classifications include specified unworked, roughly shaped and worked loose precious and semiprecious stones under HTSUS heading 7103. View the official USTR action.
