The Timepiece Times: Rolex Revisits a Collector Favorite

Three Rolex Perpetual 1908 calendar and moonphase watches against a black background

September 22, 2026

Rolex has introduced a new Perpetual Padellone, bringing the appearance of a celebrated vintage calendar watch into its current collection. In its September 15 hands-on report, Hodinkee described a 39-millimeter watch offered in Everose gold or platinum, with a calendar and moon-phase display. Reported U.S. retail prices start at $59,000 for the Everose version on a strap. Those are new-watch retail prices; they do not establish what a dealer will pay for a pre-owned example. There is an easily missed distinction in the name. Although the model belongs to Rolex’s Perpetual collection, its calendar is an annual calendar: it requires a calendar correction at the transition from February to March. The vintage reference 8171 that inspired it used a simpler calendar requiring more frequent adjustment. Similar-looking watches can therefore offer quite different mechanisms and ownership experiences.

For the pre-owned trade, the useful question is how this release changes the choices available to a collector. Someone attracted to the design can now compare a contemporary interpretation with an older watch whose appeal includes its age, originality and history. Our view is that those deserve separate evaluations. A new release alone does not establish a higher selling price for a vintage watch. Buyers and sellers still need evidence about the particular reference, its condition and comparable transactions.
