Terminology used in the trade to describe originality and condition.
- Franken
- A watch assembled from the parts of several watches, or fitted with components that were not original to it. Authentic parts, but not a correct example of the reference.
- Gray Market
- A genuine watch sold outside the manufacturer's authorized dealer network. Its warranty status, service history, and accompanying paperwork must be evaluated individually.
- Aftermarket Parts
- Components made outside the original manufacturer, including certain bezels, inserts, dials, hands, crystals, bracelets, clasps, or crowns.
- Aftermarket Stones
- Stones added outside the manufacturer. Aftermarket-set and factory-set examples are valued differently.
- Service Dial & Service Hands
- Genuine manufacturer replacements fitted during a past service. Authentic, but not original to the watch. On a collectible reference the difference can be substantial.
- Redial
- A dial refinished outside the manufacturer. Refinishing may materially affect collector value.
- Relumed
- Luminous material replaced on the dial or hands. Original lume, and lume consistent between dial and hands, can carry weight on vintage references.
- Over-Polished
- Refinishing that rounds the lugs, softens the chamfers, and reduces the original contrast between brushed and polished surfaces. Removed metal cannot be restored.
- Unpolished
- A term used for a case believed to retain its original geometry and finish. Because prior refinishing is not always conclusively determinable, the term should be used cautiously.
- Full Set
- Watch, box, warranty card or certificate, booklets, tags, and correct accessories. Watch only indicates none of these are included.
- Stretch
- Wear in the bracelet links that allows the bracelet to sag. Addressing it is a repair cost that varies by reference.
- Superclone
- A sophisticated counterfeit made to resemble a genuine watch under casual inspection and sometimes fitted with a decorated imitation movement. Authentication may require detailed examination.
Rolex
Details commonly examined on Rolex references.
- Rehaut Engraving
- The serial engraved into the inner bezel ring, phased in from around 2005. Its presence, alignment, and font are among the details examined.
- Laser Etched Crown
- A small crown etched into the crystal at six o'clock on watches from roughly 2002 forward. Visible at an angle under magnification.
- Cerachrom & Aluminum Inserts
- Ceramic inserts can chip at the edge and around the pearl. Faded aluminum inserts on vintage sports references are valued differently when original than when replaced.
- Punched Papers
- Older warranty cards physically punched by the selling dealer to record the sale date. Unpunched, undated, or blank cards are assessed differently.
- Service Card & Service Papers
- Documentation from a service visit rather than the original sale. It is a different record from a factory warranty card.
- Solid End Links
- Later bracelets use solid end links and machined clasps; earlier ones are folded and hollow. End links correct for a different reference are a recognized finding.
- Drilled Lugs
- Through-drilled lug holes found on certain earlier sports references. Their presence may help assess whether a case is consistent with a particular production period.
- Tritium, Luminova, Chromalight
- Successive generations of luminous material. Dial text can indicate which period a dial belongs to.
Cartier
Details commonly examined on Cartier references.
- Aftermarket Setting
- Santos, Panthère, Ballon Bleu, and Tank cases are among those set with stones after leaving the manufacturer. Factory-set and aftermarket-set examples are valued differently.
- Secret Signature
- Cartier incorporates its name within a Roman numeral on many dials. Its position and presence are among the details examined.
- Cabochon Crown
- The decorative stone fitted to the crown on many Cartier watches. Its material, condition, and originality may affect value.
- Softened Case Flanks
- Tank and Santos cases are defined by flat planes and defined edges. Refinishing can round them, and the effect is more apparent on a rectangular case.
- Signed Buckle
- A deployant or tang buckle correct for the model and Cartier signed. Straps and buckles are frequently changed over a watch's life.
- Quartz Or Mechanical
- Many references exist in both. The movement fitted affects value, and on older pieces movements may have been changed.
Patek Philippe
Details commonly examined on Patek Philippe references.
- Extract From The Archives
- Manufacturer confirmation of a watch's configuration when it left the manufacture, including case and movement numbers and the original sale date.
- Certificate Of Origin
- The modern document accompanying the watch from new. Its presence is a factor in valuation on current production.
- Double Sealed
- Described as still in its factory seal and unopened. A specific claim that warrants verification.
- Matching Numbers
- Case, movement, and where applicable dial, consistent with one another and with archive records.
- Case Weight & Sharp Lugs
- A case that has been refinished may lose weight and edge definition. Weighing the case and assessing the lugs are recognized methods of evaluation.
- Patek Philippe Seal
- An in-house standard adopted in 2009 covering the finished watch rather than the movement alone. The mark a watch carries indicates its period.
