Natural Thai Blue Sapphire 1.66 ct Emerald Cut and Diamond 1.25 ct Ring in 18kt White Gold, SGL Report

ARTICLE: Ring, 18kt white gold, centering one natural, earth mined blue sapphire of Thai origin within an elaborately worked diamond mounting.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in 18kt white gold to a high polish finish. Center stone prong set with squared corner claws. Shoulders channel set with straight cut baguette diamonds, flanked above and below by rows of bead set round brilliant diamonds, the whole finished in fine milgrain. The gallery beneath the head is pierced and scrolled and carries additional bead set diamonds down the inner faces. Measures 8.0 mm in width across the top and tapers to 4.93 mm at the rear. Gross weight 10.11 grams. Present finger size 7 US. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One emerald cut natural sapphire weighing 1.66 carats, measuring 8.00 by 5.98 by 3.47 mm. Color deep blue. Geographic origin Thailand.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, signed by Bear Williams, FGA and Cara Williams, FGA. The report states the identification, weight, measurements, color, treatment, and country of origin of the center stone, and is furnished with the ring.

TREATMENT: Thai sapphire is heat treated as a matter of routine, and Thailand is itself the center of the world's corundum heat treatment industry. Heating of corundum is a common, permanent, and stable practice requiring no special care. The treatment finding for this specific stone is stated on the accompanying report, which governs.

ACCENT STONES: Straight cut baguette and round brilliant cut natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 1.25 carats, graded approximately G in color and VS in clarity.

METAL CONTENT: At 18kt fineness the mounting carries approximately 7.6 grams of pure gold.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Channel work tight and even, bead settings intact, milgrain crisp and unworn. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: On most colored stone rings the mounting exists to serve the center stone. Here the relationship is closer to equal. A full 1.25 carats of graded diamond across two cuts, worked into channels and bead set rows with milgrain edging and a pierced scrolled gallery beneath, is a great deal of bench work by any measure, and at ten grams of 18kt the ring has the weight to carry it. The squared claws holding the sapphire are a period-correct touch that suits the geometry of an emerald cut, and the deep blue sits well against the density of white metal and white stone surrounding it.

CARE: Sapphire is corundum and among the hardest of gem materials, well suited to regular wear. Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush.
