Natural Colombian Emerald 1.90 ct Cushion Cabochon and Diamond Ring in 14kt White Gold, SGL Report

ARTICLE: Lady's ring, 14kt white gold, centering one natural, earth mined Colombian emerald cabochon with diamond shoulders.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in 14kt white gold to a high polish finish. Center stone prong set. Shoulders bead set with round brilliant diamonds running down each side of the shank. Gross weight 5.64 grams. Present finger size 6 1/4 US. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One cushion cabochon natural emerald weighing 1.90 carats, measuring 7.80 by 7.44 by 4.59 mm. Color described in the accompanying report as vivid bluish green. Geographic origin Colombia.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, report number 190606A-SB, dated June 11, 2019, signed by Bear Williams, FGA, CG and Cara Williams, FGA. The report identifies the stone as beryl, variety emerald, states the opinion that the country of origin is Colombia, and notes evidence of minor clarity enhancement.

TREATMENT DISCLOSURE, AND WHY THE WORD "MINOR" MATTERS: This emerald has been clarity enhanced. The practice, commonly called oiling, fills surface reaching fissures with a colorless substance and applies to the overwhelming majority of emeralds at every level of the market. What distinguishes this stone is the degree. The extent of enhancement is graded, and a finding of minor indicates comparatively little filler was required, which in turn indicates a stone with comparatively few surface reaching fissures to fill. Buyers rarely see this distinction stated, and it is worth more than the general disclosure it sits inside. The treatment is impermanent, may diminish over time, and can be renewed by a qualified gemologist.

ACCENT STONES: Round brilliant cut natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 0.75 carats, graded approximately G in color and VS in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Prongs full, bead settings intact. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: Vivid is the highest saturation description applied on a report, and on a Colombian emerald it is not a word given away lightly. The cabochon form deserves a note. It often signals rough better suited to a dome than to faceting, and the minor enhancement finding here points instead to a cutter choosing to keep weight and depth of color in a compact stone rather than facet away material to chase brilliance. The result is a dome of unbroken color rather than a field of flashes, which is a different and quieter way to wear emerald, and one that shows the hue itself more honestly than faceting does.

CARE: Because clarity enhancement in emerald is impermanent, clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush only. Keep away from ultrasonic machines, steam, solvents, acetone, and harsh detergents. Emerald is more susceptible to chipping than corundum and should be protected from sharp knocks, and as with any cabochon the dome takes direct contact rather than spreading it across facets.
