Natural Ethiopian Emerald 4.88 ct Oval and Diamond Ring in 14kt Yellow Gold, SGL Report No. 191119D-SB

ARTICLE: Ring, 14kt yellow gold, centering one natural, earth mined emerald of Ethiopian origin within a flush set diamond surround.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in 14kt yellow gold to a high polish finish. Center stone bezel set within a raised oval head, the surround flush set with single cut diamonds so that the stones sit level with the surface of the metal. Heavy tapering shank. Present finger size 6 1/2 US. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One oval cut natural emerald weighing 4.88 carats, measuring 12.03 by 9.73 by 6.53 mm. Color described in the accompanying report as green. Geographic origin Ethiopia. Notably clean for the species.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, report number 191119D-SB, dated November 21, 2019, signed by Bear Williams, FGA, CG and Cara Williams, FGA. The report identifies the stone as beryl, variety emerald, and states the opinion that the country of origin is Ethiopia. The report notes evidence of clarity enhancement.

TREATMENT DISCLOSURE: This emerald has been clarity enhanced. The practice, commonly called oiling, involves filling surface reaching fissures with a colorless substance to reduce their visibility. It is common and accepted throughout the trade and applies to the overwhelming majority of emeralds at every level of the market. The treatment is impermanent, may diminish over time, and can be renewed by a qualified gemologist.

ACCENT STONES: Single cut natural, earth mined diamonds, flush set, total weight approximately 0.42 carats, graded approximately G in color and VS in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Bezel tight to the emerald. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: Ethiopian emerald is a recent arrival. The deposits in the Oromia region south of Shakiso only reached meaningful production in the last decade, which makes documented Ethiopian material a genuine novelty against sources that have been worked for centuries. What brought the field to the attention of the trade so quickly was clarity: Ethiopian rough frequently yields stones markedly cleaner than Colombian or Zambian material of comparable color, and that is evident in this stone. At nearly five carats with saturated green color and the transparency this one holds, it is an unusually complete package. The flush setting is also the correct structural decision here, since stones set level with the surface present no raised edges to catch, which matters on a ring built at this weight.

CARE: Because clarity enhancement in emerald is impermanent, clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush only. Keep away from ultrasonic machines, steam, solvents, acetone, and harsh detergents. Emerald is more susceptible to chipping than corundum and should be protected from sharp knocks.
