Natural Green Tourmaline 14.73 ct Emerald Cut and Diamond 2.10 ct Halo Ring in 14kt White Gold, SGL Report

CENTER STONE: One emerald cut natural green tourmaline weighing 14.73 carats. Color a deep, saturated green.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, signed by Bear Williams, FGA and Cara Williams, FGA. The report states the identification, weight, measurements, color, and treatment findings for the center stone, and is furnished with the ring.

ACCENT STONES: Round brilliant cut natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 2.10 carats, graded approximately G to H in color and VS in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Halo intact with no lifted or missing stones. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: Almost fifteen carats in a single emerald cut tourmaline is a substantial stone, and the cut is the right one for the material. Tourmaline is strongly pleochroic, showing different depths of color along different crystal directions, and it absorbs light heavily down the length of the crystal. A cutter working green rough must orient the stone so that the lighter direction faces up, and must keep the pavilion open enough to return light rather than swallow it. The long step facets of an emerald cut do that work well and give a clear view into the body of the stone. The two carat halo is proportioned to the center rather than to a smaller stone, which keeps the frame in scale.

NOTE ON VIEWING: Deeply saturated green tourmaline shows its color best in strong light. Under dim or heavily diffuse lighting a stone of this tone will darken and close somewhat. That is how the species behaves, and it is worth seeing the ring in daylight to judge it fairly.

CARE: Tourmaline should be kept away from significant heat and removed before any bench work involving a torch. Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush, and keep away from ultrasonic machines and steam. Rhodium plating on white gold is a surface finish that wears with use and can be renewed inexpensively by any competent jeweler.
