Natural Unheated Blue Sapphire 5.16 ct Cabochon and Diamond Halo Ring in 14kt White Gold, SGL Report No. 181101S-SB

ARTICLE: Lady's ring, 14kt white gold, centering one natural, earth mined unheated blue sapphire cabochon within a diamond halo.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in 14kt white gold. Halo style head with diamond work continuing down the shoulders. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One oval cabochon natural sapphire weighing 5.16 carats, measuring 11.32 by 9.17 by 4.74 mm. Color described in the accompanying report as deep blue.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, report number 181101S-SB, dated November 6, 2018, signed by Bear Williams, FGA, CG and Cara Williams, FGA. The report identifies the stone as corundum, variety sapphire, and states: natural, unheated.

ACCENT STONES: Round brilliant cut natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 1.28 carats, graded approximately G in color and SI1 in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Bezel and halo tight to the cabochon. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: The cabochon form and the unheated finding are connected, and understanding one explains the other. Sapphire is cut en cabochon when the rough carries enough internal silk to interfere with a faceted return. That same silk is the microscopic rutile that heat treatment is largely intended to dissolve, so a sapphire retaining its silk is a sapphire that has kept its original state. What the report confirms here, the eye can also read in the stone itself. Unheated blue sapphire carries a premium in the market accordingly. At 5.16 carats holding a deep blue rather than a washed or grayed tone, and set into a full diamond halo that lifts the dome, this is a considered piece rather than an assembled one.

CARE: Sapphire is corundum, among the hardest of gem materials, and is well suited to regular wear. Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. As with any cabochon, the dome takes the contact a faceted crown would spread across facets, so the stone is best protected from direct abrasion.
