Natural Unheated White Star Sapphire 11.94 ct and Diamond Ring in Platinum, SGL Report No. 190318F-SB

ARTICLE: Lady's ring, platinum, centering one natural, earth mined unheated white star sapphire with diamond accents. Vintage style manufacture.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in platinum. Center stone prong set. Diamonds bead and bright set with milgrain beading, carried up the shank, across the sides of the shank, and up the prongs. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One oval cabochon natural star sapphire weighing 11.94 carats, measuring 13.51 by 10.41 by 8.10 mm. Color near colorless. Asterism sharp and well centered.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, report number 190318F-SB, dated March 19, 2019, signed by Bear Williams, FGA, CG and Cara Williams, FGA. The report identifies the stone as corundum, variety white star sapphire, and states: natural, unheated.

ACCENT STONES: Round brilliant cut natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 1.00 carat, graded approximately F in color and VS1 in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Milgrain crisp and unworn. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: Two findings on the report carry the value here. The stone is natural, and it is unheated, and in star corundum those are the two questions a buyer most wants settled by a report rather than by eye. Color is the other distinction. Star sapphire is encountered overwhelmingly in blue and gray, and a near colorless white star carrying a legible six ray asterism is a considerably scarcer article. The stone is cut deep, at 8.10 mm against a 10.41 mm width, which is a requirement rather than a fault: the dome must carry sufficient height for the rays to gather and travel across the surface.

NOTE ON VIEWING: A star is best observed under a single point light source such as direct sun or a spotlight. Under diffuse or overhead lighting the rays soften. This is a property of asterism, and it is how the phenomenon behaves in every star stone.
