Pamphylia, Aspendus AR Stater, c. 380-325 BC, NGC F

An ancient silver stater struck at Aspendus in Pamphylia during the fourth century BC. The coin belongs to the city's wrestler-and-slinger series: two wrestlers appear on the obverse, while the reverse shows a slinger with the triskeles, the three-legged emblem associated with Aspendus.

Aspendus, also spelled Aspendos, stood in southern Anatolia, within present-day Türkiye. Its silver staters are among the more recognizable civic coin types of ancient Pamphylia.

Historical note

Aspendus was an important city of ancient Pamphylia, near the Eurymedon River on the southern coast of Anatolia. During the fourth century BC the city issued silver staters with wrestlers on the obverse and a slinger on the reverse. The triskeles served as a civic emblem. The precise significance of the wrestler design remains debated among scholars, and no interpretation of the figures is presented here as established.
