Natural Rubellite Tourmaline 10.97 ct Checkerboard Cushion and Diamond 1.77 ct Ring in Platinum, SGL Report No. 201105E-SB

ARTICLE: Lady's ring, platinum, centering one natural, earth mined rubellite tourmaline within a pavé diamond halo. Custom manufacture.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in platinum. Center stone set within a halo of round brilliant cut diamonds, with diamond work continuing down the shoulders and a pierced decorative gallery beneath the stone. Gross weight 15.36 grams. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One natural elbaite tourmaline, variety rubellite, weighing 10.97 carats, measuring 14.27 by 13.64 by 8.84 mm. Cut as a cushion with a checkerboard crown. Color described in the accompanying report as purplish red.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, report number 201105E-SB, dated November 24, 2020, signed by Bear Williams, FGA and Cara Williams, FGA. The report identifies the stone as elbaite tourmaline, variety rubellite.

NOTE ON COLOR ORIGIN: The report carries the standard notation for this variety, that the color of rubellite may be enhanced by natural or artificial irradiation. This is a species level observation rather than a finding specific to this stone. Rubellite takes its red color from irradiation, and the two sources cannot presently be distinguished from one another. Either way the color is permanent under normal wear and the material carries no residual radioactivity.

ACCENT STONES: Round brilliant cut natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 1.77 carats, graded approximately G to H in color and VS to SI1 in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Pavé intact with no lifted or missing beads. Mounting sound.

REMARKS: A checkerboard crown is a considered choice on a stone of this depth. At 8.84 mm deep the faceted grid across the top breaks up and returns light that a conventional crown would swallow in a stone this saturated, and it keeps an eleven carat rubellite from reading as a flat block of color. The pierced gallery is a further indication of custom work rather than a stock casting, since it serves to admit light from beneath the pavilion. Rubellite at this weight with even color across the face is not a stone that turns up regularly.

CARE: Tourmaline should be kept away from significant heat, which can alter irradiation induced color, and should be removed before any bench work involving a torch. Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. Keep away from ultrasonic machines and steam.
