A substantial necklace and matching earring suite designed by Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co., executed in hammered 18K yellow gold and marked ©89.
The necklace is built from oversized interlocking links, each worked with an irregular hand-hammered surface that breaks the light across the gold. There are no stones and no applied ornament: the design takes its effect from scale, weight, texture and the movement of the links themselves. The matching earrings repeat the same hammered-link vocabulary in a compact double-link form.
The suite weighs approximately 231.76 grams in total, 200.76 grams for the necklace and approximately 31.00 grams for the pair of earrings. This places it at the heavy end of the documented weight range for this design, which is more commonly encountered in lighter examples.

Designer note
Paloma Picasso began designing for Tiffany & Co. in 1980. Her work through the decade that followed is characterized by strong graphic forms, pronounced scale and a sculptural treatment of gold. This hammered-link design is one of the clearer expressions of that approach, and the weight of the present suite gives the design its intended presence.
