Vintage 1940s Natural Colombian Emerald 0.90 ct and Diamond Ring in Platinum and 18kt White Gold, SGL Report No. 190509O-SB

ARTICLE: Lady's ring, platinum and 18kt white gold, centering one natural, earth mined Colombian emerald within a spray of marquise and baguette cut diamonds. American, circa 1940s.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in platinum and 18kt white gold. Center stone set within an asymmetric fan of seven graduating marquise cut diamonds and six straight cut baguette diamonds. Gross weight 7.17 grams. Present finger size 5 US. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One emerald cut natural emerald weighing 0.90 carats, measuring 6.13 by 5.67 by 3.89 mm. Color described in the accompanying report as green. Geographic origin Colombia.

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, report number 190509O-SB, dated May 28, 2019, signed by Bear Williams, FGA, CG and Cara Williams, FGA. The report identifies the stone as beryl, variety emerald, and states the opinion that the country of origin is Colombia. The report notes evidence of clarity enhancement.

TREATMENT DISCLOSURE: This emerald has been clarity enhanced. The practice, commonly referred to as oiling, involves filling surface reaching fissures with a colorless substance to reduce their visibility. It is common and accepted throughout the gem trade and applies to the overwhelming majority of emeralds offered at every level of the market. The treatment is impermanent, may diminish over time, and can be renewed by a qualified gemologist.

ACCENT STONES: Seven graduating marquise cut and six straight cut baguette natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 1.00 carat, graded approximately G to H in color and VS in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: Colombian origin is the benchmark for emerald and remains the standard against which material from every other deposit is measured, which is what makes a documented origin opinion worth having on a stone of this size. The mounting is characteristic of the 1940s, when platinum work returned after wartime restriction and asymmetric diamond sprays came into fashion. The graduation of the marquise stones and the run of baguettes framing them is careful bench work rather than a stock head.

CARE: Because clarity enhancement in emerald is impermanent, clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush only. Keep away from ultrasonic machines, steam, solvents, acetone, and harsh detergents.
