Vintage 1960s Natural Ceylon Sapphire 2.72 ct and Diamond 1.87 ct Ring in 18kt White Gold, SGL Report No. 180929S-SB

ARTICLE: Lady's ring, 18kt white gold, centering one natural, earth mined Ceylon sapphire within an asymmetric diamond spray. American, circa 1960s.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in 18kt white gold to a high polish finish. Center stone claw set, surrounded by an asymmetric arrangement of five marquise cut diamonds and round brilliant cut diamonds fanning outward from the head rather than enclosing it. Measures 18.91 mm in length by 18.36 mm in width across the top and tapers to 2.03 mm at the rear of the shank. Gross weight 8.27 grams. Present finger size 6 US. Suitable for sizing.

CENTER STONE: One oval cut natural sapphire weighing 2.72 carats, measuring 9.13 by 6.87 by 4.76 mm. Color described in the accompanying report as light blue. Geographic origin Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

REPORT: Accompanied by an SGL Gemstone Identification and Origin Report, report number 180929S-SB, dated October 4, 2018, signed by Bear Williams, FGA, CG and Cara Williams, FGA. The report identifies the stone as corundum, variety sapphire, states the opinion that the country of origin is Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and notes indications of thermal enhancement.

TREATMENT DISCLOSURE: This sapphire has been heat treated. Heating of corundum is a common, permanent, and stable practice within the gem trade, applies to the large majority of blue sapphire at every price level, requires no special care, and is disclosed here in accordance with standard industry disclosure.

ACCENT STONES: Five marquise cut diamonds together with round brilliant cut natural, earth mined diamonds, total weight approximately 1.87 carats, graded approximately G in color and VS in clarity.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Marquise tips protected and intact, prongs full. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior repair.

REMARKS: Ceylon is the origin name that matters most for sapphire of this character, and light blue is the signature of the source. Sri Lankan material is prized for brightness rather than depth of tone, tending toward high transparency and a lively, open return of light. That quality is what the 1960s goldsmith was working with, and the mounting answers it correctly. An asymmetric spray of marquise and round diamonds fanning outward keeps the piece open and light rather than compressing the sapphire inside a closed frame, and at nearly 1.9 carats of graded diamond against a 2.72 carat center, the surround is a substantial part of what is being bought.

CARE: Sapphire is corundum and among the hardest of gem materials, well suited to regular wear. The marquise diamonds carry pointed tips, which are the most vulnerable feature on any mounting of this style and should be checked periodically by a jeweler. Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush.
