ARTICLE: Ring, 18kt yellow gold, wide dome band pavé set with round brilliant cut diamonds. American, circa 1980s. Custom manufacture.
MOUNTING: Fabricated in 18kt yellow gold to a high polish finish. Domed profile, pavé set across the upper face with polished gold shoulders. Measures 14.89 mm in width at the top, tapering to 9.72 mm at the rear of the shank. Gross weight 18.26 grams. Present finger size 6 1/2 US. Suitable for sizing.
DIAMONDS: Round brilliant cut natural diamonds, pavé set, total weight approximately 1.50 carats, graded approximately D in color and VS in clarity.
METAL CONTENT: At 18kt fineness the piece carries approximately 13.7 grams of pure gold, or approximately 0.44 troy ounces.
CONDITION: Examined under magnification. All stones present and secure at the time of examination. Pavé intact with no lifted or missing beads and no flattened bright cut. Polish crisp with no significant abrasion to the gold shoulders. Mounting sound with no evidence of prior sizing.
REMARKS: The diamond specification is the story here. Pavé melee is ordinarily where a manufacturer economizes, and finding a full 1.50 carats of it graded to the colorless range and VS clarity is well outside what a band of this style usually carries. Combined with eighteen grams of 18kt and a dome that tapers properly through the shank rather than staying uniformly heavy, this reads as a piece made to order rather than bought from a catalog. The wide dome silhouette is characteristic of better American work of the 1980s and has returned to fashion in the cigar band revival.
Weights and grades stated are approximate and determined while the stones are mounted, in accordance with standard practice for jewelry examined in the setting.
