Vintage 1990s Black Opal 75.45 ct Dolphin Pendant Necklace in 14kt Yellow Gold

ARTICLE: Pendant and chain, 14kt yellow gold, centering one large black opal within a figural dolphin bezel. American, circa 1990s.

MOUNTING: Fabricated in 14kt yellow gold to a high polish finish. The bezel is modeled with three dolphin figures across two corners. Pendant measures 2 inches in height by 1.5 inches in width. Suspended from a 14kt yellow gold Byzantine link chain measuring 2.67 mm in width by 17 inches in length, fitted with two removable dolphin slides measuring 18.25 by 7.16 mm. Gross weight of the assembled piece 45.93 grams.

CENTER STONE: One square cut black opal weighing 75.45 carats. Play of color displays green, gray, blue, yellow, and red across a dark body tone.

CONDITION: Examined under magnification. The opal exhibits crazing. The network of surface fissures is present throughout and is disclosed here as a material condition of the stone. At the time of examination the opal appeared stable and was secure in its bezel, and the mounting and chain were found sound with the clasp functioning correctly. Crazing in opal is not repairable and may progress. The stone should be kept away from heat, direct sunlight for extended periods, ultrasonic cleaning, and sudden changes in temperature or humidity.

REMARKS: The scale of the opal is the defining feature of this piece, and the dolphin motif of the bezel and slides was executed to echo the marine character of the stone's color play. This is a substantial and unusual piece of period American goldsmithing. The crazing is reflected in the asking price, and the piece is offered on that basis.
